Introduction to VMD (step 4: Atom selections)

Frequently, you will find it neccessary to have different representation of specific parts of your molecule at the same time. Thus we will add a new representation: In the "Graphical Representation" window click the "Create Rep" button on the left side. First you will notice nothing as this will copy the current representation of your molecule. Now, chose "Bonds" as drawing method, and click the "Selections" tab. Enter "resname ASN" in the upper text field and press Enter. Your windows should now look like follows:

You see the atoms of the asparagin residues connected by bonds. This selection option allows you to chose among a variety of different selections. Try out some of them like "resname ARG OR GLU" to see what is happening. This example also uses boolean operators.
